Abstract

All this time, jequirity plant (Abrus precatorius L.) is used as a remedy for cough and oral ulceration. The content of saponins and flavonoids contained in jequirity can be used as an antibacterial. The research aims to make the jequirity extract lozenges with different Plasdone K25 concentrations as the binder and determine the Plasdone K25 concentration effect as binder on physical properties of jequirity extract lozenges. Jequirity extract was made by maceration with ethanol solvent of 70%. Lozenges were made by direct compression method with binder variations of Plasdone K25 3% for formula I; 4 % for formula II; 5% for formula III; 6% for formula IV. The powder was compressed using a single punch machine with the weight of 700 mg. Before molded into a powder tablet, some evaluations were conducted including test of flow time, angle of repose, compressibility, and particles size distribution. The tablets that had been molded also got some evaluation tests conducted on their physical properties, including weight uniformity, friability, hardness and disintegration time. The results obtained show that the use of Plasdone K25 as the binder in the manufacture of jequirity extract lozenges by direct compression in all lozenges formulas meet the requirements. And from the four formulas, the third formula shows as the best formula as being seen from the evaluation results of the tablet which has the smallest friability level and the highest hardness level.
