Abstract

According to the Decree of Director General of Food and DrugsDepartment of Health No. 00386/C/SK/II/90 on changes to the attachment of Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 239/Menkes/Per/V/85, there are 5 dyes that are prohibited from being added into food, medicine and cosmetics. One of which is a synthetic dye that is commonly known as Rhodamine B. Rhodamine B is a synthetic dye in the form of crystal powder, odorless, purplish red, and in a solution of bright red fluorescent (fluoresces), Rhodamine B has several other names including tetra ethylrhodamine and Rheonine B chloride. Rhodamine B is usually used as a dye in textiles and paper. Rhodamine B can cause irritation to the short-term exposure and has carcinogenic effects. The aim of this study is to determine whether there is Rhodamine B in a red kerupuk circulating in North Jakarta markets. The method used is observational descriptive. Sample was taken by purposive sampling and obtained 24 red samples. In order to identify the Rhodamine B, Thin Layer Chromatography method was applied using Silica Gel GF254 as stationary phase with two eluents as a mobile phase namely eluent II (n-butanol : ethylacetate : ammonia) (10:4:5) and eluent II (ethylmethylketon : aceton : water) (70:30:30) as well as Rhodamine B as a reference standard. The results showed that out of 24 samples of krupuk being identified, there are two (2) samples which positively contain Rhodamine B.
