Abstract

Betel leaves contain essential oil consisting of phenol compound and eugenolderivatesand kavikol. Kavikol compound, aside from inducing a unique scent to betel leaves, also possess a bactericidal nature. The leaf could be made into an extract to understand the anti-bacterial activity of betel leaves on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.The anti-bacterial test was carried out to Staphylococcus aureus with 20%, 30%, and 40% extract concentration. The positive control used wasampicillin and the negative control was ethanol.The research result indicated thatbetel leaves extract denoted an inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureusstarting from the 20% concentration. The thick extractobtainedwas then made into ointment with water soluble ointment base. Physical evaluation test on the ointment included a testing of organoleptic, homogeneity, pH level, and dispersive power. Based on this research, it concludedthat the ointment made from betel leaf extract was physically stable and metthe testing requirements forointment dosage.
