Abstract

Hormophysa cuneiformis is a type of brown marine macroalgae found in Sayang Heulang Beach, Garut, West Java, and contains various secondary metabolites which may be a source of natural antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to compare and vary the best time to produce maximum yield, antioxidant activity, and toxicity of Hormophysa cuneiformis methanol extract. This research was conducted experimentally, including macroalgae side and preparation, phytochemical screening, extraction of Hormophysa cuneiformis by maceration and UAE methods, antioxidant activity testing based on the DPPH test (2.2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and toxicity testing using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality) method. The results showed that the methanol extract of Hormophysa cuneiformis with a yield proportion of 6.76% for maceration and 5.53% for Uae contained flavonoids and steroids. The antioxidant activity (IC50) for maceration was 59.47 g/mL while the UAE was 108.57 g/mL. And for the toxicity test (LC50) for maceration, 217,859 g/mL while the UAE is 844,294 g/mL. Based on the IC50 value, the macerated extract may be a strong antioxidant (less than 100 ppm) while the UAE extract may be a moderate antioxidant (101-150 ppm). based on the value (LC50) for maceration in the very toxic category while the UAE is in the medium toxicity category.
